I have not tried to make my own Absinthe, yet. Although I did make some Dandelion wine with a freind of mine a few summers ago..which was quite nice.

However, if anyone is interested in making their own absinthe, check this link out...

Another Reason Not to Set Fire to Absinthe

http://www.geelongadvertiser.com.au/article/2008/04/19/13229_news.html

'My face was on fire' says Geelong girl

Daniel Breen

19Apr08

FOR five seconds Stefanie Eichler's face was engulfed in flames.

A stray sip of absinthe and an application of hairspray to set her make-up conspired against the Newtown teenager, with flames from the burning spirit lighting up her face.

Her friends watched in horror as blue and yellow flames from the drink covered the lower half of Miss Eichler's face.

"Under my nose, my face was just on fire. It got my eyebrows, eyelashes and my hairline as well," she said.

"It went out really quickly once the hairspray was burnt. I'd say my face was on fire for about five seconds. It was excruciating at the time. Until the next day it felt like my face had been in a bonfire. It was so hot."

The youngster rushed to Geelong Hospital after the mishap.

"I went to the hospital and they gave me a gel to help it heal. I went back the next morning and saw a plastic surgeon and they said it would all heal without surgery and there'd be minimal scarring," Miss Eichler said. "The only thing is that I will lose some pigment to my skin where it burnt."

Six days later, Miss Eichler's face still shows some of the effects of the accident but the teen said she had found the strength to laugh at her misfortune.

"My whole face is pretty swollen, so we've sort of made a joke of it. My aunty says when it all heals my lips should look like Angelina Jolie's," she said.

The Geelong bar that served the shot has banned flaming drinks since the incident.

Miss Eichler declined to reveal which bar she bought her serve of absinthe at but decided to tell her story to warn others about the dangers of flaming shots.

She also declared she would never again apply hairspray to her face to prevent her make-up from fading.

"Definitely not. I'd rather the make-up just come off because it's so not worth it," she said.

"I'm scared of fire in general now."

Miss Eichler said she had consumed absinthe before but her fatal mistake was hesitating just as she was about to drink the shot.

"Instinct tells you that this isn't right, drinking something that's on fire, and I spilled it on me and the hairspray caught alight," she said.

"I guess people wouldn't think about how bad it could be."

Review of Absinto Camargo

Absinto Camargo

I placed an order through BevMax on Feb. 5, 2008. Two bottles at $24.99 each and $22.58 for shipping made the bill be $72.56.

It arrived today, Feb. 18, 2008, apparently the majority of the delay was due to freezing weather conditions in the northeast. The FedEx route went from Stamford, CT through Elmsford, NY, Keasbey, NJ, North Salt Lake City, UT, Reno, NV and Benicia, CA, before arriving at my house in Lafayette. Interesting to note that the “Adult Signature Required” restriction was not adhered to – the delivery driver set it on the front step and rang the doorbell, then left.

The product arrived intact in a good shipping container.

The Label has some interesting artwork, although the green fairy that is depicted seems to have an Asian look about her. The label states that it is a product of Brazil and that it is 54% alcohol by volume. The back label includes directions and illustrations on how to prepare Absinto, which is a nice touch if you haven’t got a clue about appropriate preparation. It also includes a suggested cocktail recipe.

The cork is interesting, I don’t think I’ve ever seen one quite like it before. It has a notched wooden cap filled with a composite cork. The cap is tied to the bottle in an effort to keep it from coming loose when it is subjected to tropical heat. The cord that ties the cap on is knotted and the loose ends of the knotted cord are taped down with the bottle’s upper neck-label. It is suggested that you pull the ends of the cord up through the label and then untie the cord in order to free the cork. That’s what I did, and untying the cord is a waste of time; next time, I’m merely going to cut the cord.

The smell of the newly-opened bottle was pleasant.

The color, however, leaves something to be desired. It is almost a pale lime color, when it should be more of a dark emerald color. Once poured into the glass, it appeared almost as if the color was an artificial green, and not the result of natural chlorophylls that had been macerated out of an appropriate herb.

I prepared my first glass by diluting with ice water and two sugar cubes. I was disappointed because the drink did not louche at all.

The taste is mild, and not what I’ve come to expect of an absinthe. In addition, there was no numbing of the tongue and cheeks that one gets with some of the other products.

I will try it again in a less diluted state. Now that I’ve paid more attention to the back label, I see that I’ve diluted it according to my normal preference (1:4) and the suggested dilution is 1:2.

Final Assessment: PASS. I will pour this when I am giving people taste tests and want to provide additional variety, but I prefer the Kubler and the St. George. Even the Lucid is better than this.

Jade Absinthe Edouard

A Report:

I wound up purchasing a bottle of the Jade "Edouard" from "Liquers de France" http://www.absintheonline.com/acatalog/Jade.html

Wow. Expensive, yes. But it arrived in Las Vegas four days later (on a Sunday, no less). I call that remarkable.

The beverage itself is stunning.
Undiluted, it is a light - almost chartreuse green.
The aroma is redolent of anise, but also has clearly distinguished herbal and floral notes. It is intense, but lovely.
Just having the bottle open perfumed the room.

I used sugar and water, and diluted until the last of the green line at the top disappeared, then added one more shot of water. So roughly a three to one ratio.

The louche was delightful. At the beginning, the oily, almost lava-lamp process was very evident. Adding more water, the louche built up beautifully - rolling like an inversion layer of sea fog in a green sky. My friends glass even layered (green on the bottom - white in the middle - green on the top) something I had never seen before.

The taste: Exquisite.
fragrant, elegant, the anise still pronounced, but not at all overwhelming. Much more of the floral/herbal comes through now. Perhaps even a minty note. The mouth texture is rich and smooth. My sugar did not dissolve perfectly, so it was a little too sweet for me at the bottom, but lovely nonetheless.

My friend diluted his a little more at first (about 5 to 1) and it was too weak at this ratio. We added another half-shot of liqueur to his beverage, and that filled it out quite nicely.

The buzz? Absinthe has never been a trip toy for me. I enjoy it because of the beauty of the drink and the fun of the process. That being said - there is something special about a good absinthe buzz. It reminds me of the first "signals" that I might get from a psychotropic plant - long before the trip actually starts. Everything is lighter and depthier at the same time. Conversation flows easily, and sensation seems enhanced.

I am the first to admit that these things may simply be the result of good company, a lovely environment, and a beautiful beverage. ...but I don't think so. There is something 'sideways' about The Green Fairy, and I love her.

Peace

Jay
My First Order with Absinth24.net has been a real disappointment

I placed an order at the beginning of this month with the promise of a 10-16 business day delivery (priority method). Now, after a month. It has yet to appear. I tried contacting Andy through his site and even the payment center. Not a single response from anyone other than Christian Behrs of the Payment center, whom wrote he would try to call Andy. Now, several days later, still no response. Has anyone else had this problem. It was only a 2 bottle order, but this was a test as to ordering far more for a Fall event this year. I'm not too thrilled with the lack of response. Any help here? Similar experiences? I don't want to file a complaint with Visa, but feel no other recourse. I'm located in Burbank.

(please forgive my posting here. The listings are so rarely looked at. But if you want to try a sampling of the various Jades, or the Kubler, or try something exotic like Salvia [YUM!] or Mandragora, this is your party! And the host, Paul, kindly keeps the cheap stuff over in the "ritual" bar for the firestarters ;)

Friday the 29th of December you are cordially invited to our final event of the year. For this event we are bringing in musical talent from two of our favorite clubs. Miss Margo the creator of Dark Sparkle and Adrian and Mysterious D creators of Bootie will be spinning throughout the night.

The end of year cabaret will be something special and Paul has a brand new absinthe talk on the art surrounding absinthe in the belle epoch. Come early for free dance lessons in the theater; learn to waltz, cha cha, and rumba.

As always it’s a dress affair. Discount admission for Gentleman in a Coat and Tie, Cocktail dresses for ladies, or you can wear costumes… No Jeans, playa-wear, or dirty hippy tie-dye.

PF 1901 - new Jade

From the notice I received from Liqueurs de France this morning:

Dear absinthe enthusiast

Jade PF 1901

On August 11th 1901, lightning struck the Pernod Fils Distillery in Pontarlier. If it were not for the quick thinking of two workers who opened the spigots on the giant barrels of absinthe, allowing it to drain into the Doubs River, the destruction could have been much more severe. When the distillery was rebuilt and repaired, out-dated alembics were replaced by the most modern equipment of the time. The old alembics were either destroyed by the fire and sold for scrap or sold off to smaller distilleries. The Combier Distillery purchased two of these 1100 liter stills and installed them along with the 8 smaller stills which had been a part of the distillery since 1894. The importance of this history and especially the authenticity of these two circa 1870’s alembics were not overlooked when T.A. Breaux chose the Combier Distillery in which to make Jade vintage absinthes clones.

Finally, after 3 years of making remarkable absinthes at Combier, Breaux has announced the launch of the long awaited Jade version of the most famous absinthe ever made, Pernod Fils has arrived for the holidays! Christened Jade Absinthe ‘PF 1901’ its unusual name is in recognition of the anniversary of the year that gave the old Pernod alembics a new life. This absinthe is the highlight of the year, and much work has gone into its creation. Since the beginning of the Jade projects, techniques have been improved upon as Breaux becomes more familiar with the old equipment and plants sources have been upgraded where needed. All the wormwood used comes from Pontarlier itself, which many are now hailing as the best source in the world, let alone the origins for the absinthe that went into all the great classic Pontarlier absinthes of the 19th century. Breaux’s Jade absinthes are the first modern absinthes made outside of Pontarlier that use its wormwood, and its high aromatic qualities are quite apparent.

PF 1901 is a classic ‘old-school’ absinthe, balanced and crisp, with an appetizing herbal aroma and a smooth, lingering aftertaste. It should be noted that a large ‘cache’ of pre-ban Pernod fils absinthe has recently been discovered and amongst the well-preserved bottles which showed their 92 years of age, there were a few in a remarkable state of preservation, retaining their original color and freshness.

Those who have been fortunate enough to have been able to taste these and have also tasted the pre-release Jade PF 1901, are unanimous in their remarks as to the striking similarities between the vintage bottles and the Jade clone. Bravo for another legendary absinthe from T. A. Breaux! We expect demand for this absinthe to be high so we would advise you to click here and order now.

I am very exited to go to the party tonight...The thing is...im not sure what exactly is ok to wear. I am not so into the "scene" that i have a vintage suit laying around but i do respect why it is being done like this...The question is, will a nice pair of black dress pants and a white button collar shirt do?...If not perhaps someone can give me some good ideas of easy to find at the last minute attire. Thanks for the help all.

Can anyone recommend a decent quality, fairly cheap absinth for someone who is poor and doesn't like the taste of anise?

I have yet to buy my first bottle of absinth and don't want to waste my money on something I won't like. So far I have only tried a home made version made by a friend, and while I find myself drinking it, it is incredibly bitter. Is all absinth really so bitter?

Greetings,

I.... am a total noob. I've been fascinated with the thought of absinthe for about 20 years, but have never tried it. I hate to plunck down a large chunk of money for something that's just going to sit in my cupboard, so......

..... if I go down to the local liquer store and pick up a bottle of pernod, is THAT going to, at least, get me into the ballpark to see if I even like it?

I realize there's going to be a huge difference, but, if you've never had sex before, even a $30 whore will let you know if you like it, before you go buy a $300 one :)

ok.... give me some more on the jades :)

hello all

so I finally enjoyed my absinthes with a friend. And now we're thinking about getting more for a new year's party.

So- tell me some more about the Jades. Are they really worth it? Why?

My favorite of the ones I got was Clandestine La Bleue - the blue bottle with beautiful woman on it- I really liked that one.

I didn't like the VDF (verte de feuillers sp?) too much. I may have needed sugar- I put only a teeny 1/4 cube- i don't know......... I'm not a sweet person- I liked la bleu without & with sugar.

We did like the effect- the feeling. :) We were up very very late talking politics, military, his son's upcoming surgery with heart & lucidity

So- tell me about the jades, again, yes, I know. THe effect? the taste? color? what else? Should I get one of each?

Is a fountaine worth it? Any suggestions on where to buy one?

thank you~~ SS

Say a fellow ordered a shipment of absinthe from Absinthe24, paid the courier rates, was very happy with the delivery and the product and has developed a hankering for more--but doesn't want to pay $70. odd dollars for shipping, yet doesn't want to wait a month and chance getting the precious cargo confiscated by the federales? Are there other options that this guy may not be considering. It's amazing how quickly a couple of bottles of absinthe can disappear....

I bought my guy a beautiful botle of Swiss Absinthe for the holidays. Neither of us have ever tried it but have wanted to for a long time. I got the accessories like a spoon and sugar...what else would make the night pefect? Can you buy Absinthe glasses in the USA? Any foods that work well or should this be a solo drink? And...how's sex on a little Absinthe?

Mainly about Ted Breaux and his recent escape from New Orleans and the hurricanes, they also cover Absinthe history and the 'Jade' absinthe brand.

There's no need to buy an expensive dripper for your absinthe. I found the dripper in the link below at a local kitchen shop. It will make 4-6 glasses of absinthe without refilling it and it was under $20. Score! As much as I would like to have one of the classic style drippers, this will do the job for now.

Just wondering if there's anyone in the northwest(Portland,OR) interested in quality bottles of absinthe. The brand is "Palais Sidhe" from Distilreis Lunicimais.
" Developed from an original Ponterlier recipe, Our absinthe is compounded from all organic and wildcrafted herbs. It contains NO artificial coloring, chemical additives, nor cheap replacements for traditional ingredients. Best taken in moderation as an aperitif or cordial. ACCEPT NO IMMITATIONS 140 proof "

Tasting The VS and Fougeroulles

I will upload a jpeg to my photos to show you what I am talking about.

I poured a glass each of The Verte de Fougerolle, Blanche de Fougerolle and the Suisse Verte from the Jade selection. I used the Ted Breaux method of adding water til the ring of alcohol just was ready to disappear. My thoughts are as follows:

VdF: Greenish white louche. Grassy nose but nice perfume of anise. Strong alcohol smell, but it blends with herbs and does not get in the way. Fennel and Anise on the tongue and a bit bitter. Would improve with sugar. I added more water, now up to about 3 to 1 mix and the strong notes even out. I do prefer this with sugar though.

BdF: White opalescent louche, like mother of pearl. Chamomile predominates in the nose and the anise takes a back seat. Bursting with sweet perfume on the tongue. No need for sugar here unless you have a sweet tooth. Nice light fennel and is it Melissa that rounds out the flavors? I love this one. BdF is maybe my hands down favorite (At least when I don't have a Jade NO in front of me. Note to self order more NO). I just had a wonderful sweet burp. No doubt thanks to the BdF on an empty stomach.

SV: Greenish white louche. A nose like a summer field of sweet grasses or maybe a hint of mew mown hay. Similar to this overwhelming scent in the NO, but subtler. Much subtler. A bit heavy on the alcohol taste and leaving a hint of lavender perfume on the back of the tongue. Did you ever hug your grandmother and breathe too deeply of her perfume and it left a taste in your mouth. The same here. Sugar might mask the flavor, but why ruin the rest of that wild field of herbal flavors that linger longer than the perfume.

For my billy goat tastes, the BdF is the winner of this tasting. And Jon, I am getting the same flavors from this distiller's proof of the VS as yours. We will have to do another tasting after the final product comes out.
