I have not tried to make my own Absinthe, yet. Although I did make some Dandelion wine with a freind of mine a few summers ago..which was quite nice.
However, if anyone is interested in making their own absinthe, check this link out...

Re: Brew your own Absinthe
Mon, July 10, 2006 - 11:00 PMWhile it is possible to make your own absinthe, this certainly isn't it. If you want to make it, you'll need to know how to run a still, as it must be distilled and you'll need a recipe. A number of years ago, someone published the recipe from an early edition of Scientific American online, altering it for the amount (the original was for something like 50 barrels). I have no idea if this recipe is still online. I printed it out a years ago out of curiosity, if I can find it I'll let you know.
Cheers,
Gregory

Nope, that's not absinthe-- that's a foul tonic that should make you gag.
Repeat ten times: "Absinthe is a distilled spirit."

Shame on you
Wed, August 23, 2006 - 8:56 AMHey guys... lets take gallons of cheap vodka, toss in some star anise, and call it Uzo.
Ummm.... Yeah..... This is the REAL Absinthe tribe. Please leave all poisonous recipes at the door (preferably on trash day) That "isht" yer peddling will only leave people with a seriously nasty hangover and a bad taste in their mouths.
It's really offensive that you claim that to be the real deal, and go so far as to offer it freely on the Playa. I've heard about yer little bar over the years, (and actually hoped to find ya) as I've shared quality drinks with others. I must say I'm glad I never made it... It's likely that crap could push me over the edge.
If you want to make psychotropic/active tinctures and drink them at your own demise, that's fine. But REALLY, Don't call it something it's not... It gives the tradition of true alchemy a bad name.
YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED!!!!!
P.S. How have you made it this many years without being schooled?!? Or are you willingly participating in outright lying to these people?

Re: Brew your own Absinthe
Fri, November 10, 2006 - 3:18 PMThank you for providing these sources! There's a lot of garbage on the internet leading me to believe I can successfully produce a product with rum or vodka. -

Re: Brew your own Absinthe
Thu, December 21, 2006 - 8:44 PMI drank absinthe made with this recipe, by steeping the herbs.
heres what you need:
crock pot
1/4 inch copper tubing
1 gallon milk jug
2 large glass jars (something that will hold at least 2 or more liters, depending on how strong you want to make it)
2 bottles of everclear or wine spirits (170+proof, the purer the better)
1 once wormwood
2 grams calamis
30 grams anise seed
10 grams anise (or star anise, for flavor...the seed contributes to the psychoactivity)
25 grams fennel seed
3-4 grams coriander seed
8-9 grams hyssop
6 grams lemon balm
8-9 grams hyssop
i also heard of using red mulberry....
crush all the herbs as much as possible, the more surface area the better
wet them a little with pure water
pour just enough alcohol to cover the herbs, and shake it up. Let sit (in a warm, dark place) for 3 days to a week shaking once a day or more. Then strain it into the other jar and squeeze all the liquid out of the herbage. Pour more alcohol over the herbs, and repeat the process adding a little water on the last day. I have heard of people using half water and half alcohol, but this seems counter productive.(you do want to dilute partially when you drink it though, via the sugar cube method)
Repeat this until all the alcohol is used, and then combine both jars in the crock pot, which you have made into a still passing the tubing from the crock pot lid through the milk jug filled with ice, and then into your jar. I am out of time, you can find DIY distillation methods that are relatively safe (AT LOW TEMPERATURES) all over the web. You will have to refill the ice after about a quart passes through Let the final mixture sit for about a week, to increase the color, add a little fresh wormwood and liqurice root in while doing this. Drink up and enjoy!! -

but it's not really distillation - just maceration - which quite frankly, just ends up nasty swill... -

It doesn't make any difference! It's not absinthe! This is the REAL ABSINTHE Tribe.
Just read his post. He's making herbal tea with Everclear instead of water. -

Re: Brew your own Absinthe
Mon, August 13, 2007 - 2:54 PMare you saying that this guy does not give directions to distill it? I have never even tasted un-distilled product, however, I did read his post and it ends with him distilling it.

It seems that only Eric read this guys post. Don't change the subject on me because I know that this technique sounds ghetto, but to say that this post does not mention distillation is just plain wrong. People seen to want to copy real scholars like Eric but they don't take the time to actually read the posts. -

Are you kidding me? yuck. rubber tubing, a old milk container and a crock pot? I just said that it was distilled not that it was done well. I'll stick to my copper thanks. I am not that enamored of his recipe either but it is nothing personal. I was just standing up for the fact that the guy actually did tell people to distill it. -

No, you didn't. You drank flavored Everclear.
That's NOT absinthe! Jeez! How hard is it to understand that? -

Re: Brew your own Absinthe
Fri, December 29, 2006 - 8:46 AMDan,
Trainee absinthe distillers are always welcome in my distillery in Switzerland. I do a preliminary two week training programme and I charge about $10,000 (plus accommodation and food). To get what has taken me nearly a decade to perfect into two weeks is difficult but I guarantee you will never want flavoured Everclear again. -
